Supporting Learning at Every Age and Stage
The Georgetown Island Education Foundation (GIEF) believes that meaningful learning happens in many ways—and at every stage of life.
Whether it's funding an innovative classroom project, helping a student pursue a unique educational opportunity, or supporting postsecondary education, our grants and scholarships are designed to expand possibilities for Georgetown learners.
Through three distinct funding programs, GIEF invests in educational experiences that inspire curiosity, encourage exploration, and help students reach their full potential.
Georgetown Central School Block Grants
Our Block Grants provide ongoing support for programs that enrich learning across Georgetown Central School (GCS). These funds empower teachers, strengthen classroom experiences, and ensure students have access to innovative educational opportunities throughout the school year.
Current Block Grant funds support:
After School Enrichment Programs (including the After School Programs Enrichment Coordinator role)
Roscahegan Environmental Science Fund
Sarah Wilbur Arts Fund
Skye–McIlvain Literary Fund
Teacher Support Fund
Together, these grants strengthen the educational experience for every student at Georgetown Central School.

Individual Grants
Learning doesn't only happen in the classroom.
GIEF's Individual Grants help Georgetown students pursue educational experiences that reflect their interests, passions, and goals. Available to resident students in kindergarten through 12th grade, these grants support opportunities that encourage curiosity, creativity, and personal growth.
Current Individual Grant opportunities include:
Summer Discovery Grants – Educational summer camps and enrichment programs.
8th Grade DC Trip/Freedom Tour Grant – Assistance for students participating in the DC Trip and Freedom Tours.
High School Learning Grants – Support for independent study, mentorships, educational projects, expeditionary learning, entrepreneurship, and other learning experiences and programs.
Every Individual Grant is designed to help students explore new possibilities and create learning experiences that are uniquely their own.
Scholarships
Education is a lifelong journey.
Through our partnership with the Georgetown Working League (GWL), GIEF supports learners as they pursue education beyond high school through the Future Pathways Scholarship.
This scholarship is available to Georgetown residents pursuing a variety of postsecondary pathways, including:
Two-year colleges
Four-year colleges and universities
Vocational and technical training
Approved gap-year programs
Together with the Georgetown Working League, we're helping Georgetown learners take the next step toward their future.
Sharing the Impact
GIEF is proud to support Georgetown learners as they pursue meaningful educational experiences. To help us celebrate the impact of these opportunities and share the difference they make, grant recipients are asked to provide a brief reflection after completing their experience.
Recipients are asked to share:
A short testimonial or reflection about their experience
Photos or examples of their learning (when appropriate)
A summary of how the opportunity supported their growth, interests, or goals
These stories help us demonstrate the impact of community support and inspire future opportunities for Georgetown learners.

Every grant awarded by GIEF represents an investment in a person, a possibility, and the future of our community.
From the GCS classrooms to college campuses and everywhere in between, our funding helps Georgetown learners discover new interests, overcome barriers, and pursue meaningful educational experiences.
Because when students have the opportunity to explore, they gain the confidence to succeed—and our entire community benefits.
Grant Review Matrix
GIEF is committed to supporting educational opportunities that enrich learning and strengthen our community. Because grant funding is limited, all applications are reviewed competitively. Meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee funding.
Applications are evaluated using the following criteria:
Alignment with GIEF Mission & Vision: 30%
The project clearly supports educational excellence, innovation, or opportunities that benefit Georgetown Island students, educators, or schools.
Educational Merit & Impact: 25%
The proposal demonstrates meaningful educational value and has a clear, positive impact on student learning or professional growth.
Quality of Proposal: 20%
Goals are well-defined, the plan is realistic, and the budget is reasonable and clearly explained.
Need & Value: 15%
The project addresses an identified need and demonstrates responsible use of GIEF funds.
Applicant History: 10%
Preference may be given to applicants who have not previously received a GIEF grant, helping us extend opportunities to a broader group of educators and learners.
Funding Considerations
Grant awards are made based on both application scores and available funding.
Grants are reviewed competitively.
The number and quality of applications received each funding cycle influence award decisions.
GIEF may award full funding, partial funding, or decline funding based on available resources.
In years with a high number of strong applications, award amounts may be reduced so that funding can support multiple deserving projects.
The GIEF Board of Directors reserves the right to make final funding decisions based on the Foundation's annual budget and strategic priorities.
