About

Investing in the Future of Georgetown

The Georgetown Island Education Foundation (GIEF) is a community-led nonprofit dedicated to expanding educational opportunities for Georgetown learners. Since 2010, we have partnered with educators, families, and local organizations to ensure that every student has access to meaningful experiences that inspire curiosity, build confidence, and encourage lifelong learning.

As a 100% volunteer organization, every dollar we raise is invested in educational opportunities that directly benefit our community.

Our Mission

The Georgetown Island Education Foundation supports, enriches, and enhances the educational experience of all students on Georgetown Island, Maine.

We believe education extends far beyond the classroom. By investing in creative programs, hands-on learning, and individual opportunities, we help students discover new interests, develop their talents, and pursue their goals.

Our Vision

We envision a community where every learner is inspired to explore, create, and grow.

Our goal is to spark positive, lasting attitudes toward learning by providing access to diverse, creative, and challenging educational opportunities that encourage curiosity and open new possibilities.

Our Story

GIEF was founded in 2010 during a period of significant change for public education in Maine. As school redistricting and declining enrollment created new challenges for Georgetown Central School, a group of parents, educators, and community members came together with a shared purpose: to preserve and expand educational opportunities for Georgetown students.

From the beginning, our mission has been simple—bring the community together to invest in education.

Early grants helped launch innovative programs such as robotics, greenhouse education, and partnerships with organizations including Kennebec Estuary Land Trust and Chewonki. These initiatives broadened learning beyond traditional classroom experiences and demonstrated the impact that community support can have on student success.

Over the years, GIEF has continued to evolve alongside the needs of Georgetown students while remaining committed to the same guiding principle: every learner deserves opportunities to explore, discover, and thrive.

A Lasting Investment

Today, GIEF supports lifelong learning through grants and scholarships that serve learners from early childhood through postsecondary education.

Whether we're helping fund innovative classroom experiences, supporting an individual student's educational journey, or investing in future college and career pathways, every grant reflects our belief that education has the power to strengthen both individuals and the community as a whole.

We are proud to invest in Georgetown's learners today—and in the future of Georgetown for generations to come.

In the nearly 2 decades of operation, GIEF has awarded more than $200,000 though its various grant and scholarship programs that have impacted our community both individually and collectively. This has been made possible by the generous financial support from our amazing league of donors and local businesses.
