About

Since 2010, GIEF has been working to support, enrich, and enhance the educational programs at Georgetown Central School.

Our History

In response to Maine school redistricting and declining enrollment, a group of parents, educators and concerned residents of Georgetown cam together to create the Georgetown Island Education Foundation. GIEF was incorporated in March 2011 with a wholly volunteer Board and the mandate to use all funds raised to address the larger mission of growing educational opportunities for Georgetown students in all curricular areas.

Initially, grants were made to develop significant new programs within the school, such as robotics, the Green House, and partnerships with Kennebec Estuary Land Trust and Chewonki. While this remains one focus of funding, GIEF has also developed grant opportunities that serve other educational needs at GCS:

-innovative curricular programs, both large and small, developed by individual teachers at GCS

-innovative educational programs and projects for Georgetown students developed by adults outside of the school

-partnerships with and support for educational organizations serving Georgetown students of all ages

Student-Driven Educational Project Grants - unique in the state of Maine.

With the strong support of the community, the Foundation continues to grow and adapt in response to the needs of the Georgetown Central School and the island’s wider learning community.

In order to award and encourage student-driven educational projects, GIEF developed the Individual Student Grants program. These grants are the only one of its kind in the state. We continue to fund these on a rolling basis. Learn about past grants (HERE - link to success stories) and apply here (link to grant application/info page)

Postsecondary Scholarship program

Since (ADD YEAR), GIEF has been partnering with the Georgetown Working League by funding one of their many scholarships. We appreciate their hard work in handling the application and award process. The GIEF scholarship can be awarded to any Georgetown Leaner seeking a 2-year, vocational, or 4-year postsecondary education. Information about these grants can be found at the GWL website (LINK). Applications are generally due each spring. Apply here (LINK)
